In early December 2021, Karl Nehammer became the new chancellor of Austria. He replaced Alexander Schallenberg, who stayed as head of government for less than two months. Nehammer was sworn in by Alexander Van der Bellen on December 4.
Alexander Schallenberg resigned in early December 2021 after the announcement of his predecessor Sebastian Kurz to completely resign from politics, including from the post of chairman of the conservative Austrian People's Party (ANP). The conservatives, who have the majority of seats in parliament in the coalition with the Greens, nominated Nehammer as a candidate for chancellor. At the same time, Schallenberg again became Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In his first speech as Chancellor of Austria, Nehammer declared the fight against coronavirus the primary task of his government. COVID-19 According to him, dialogue is needed, as well as the interaction of experts, relevant departments and the opposition to develop decisions on the country's exit from the lockdown. Urgent action is needed to find ways to prevent further social divisions on anti-epidemic measures and vaccination.
