2024: Sentence - 18 years in prison for making deepfake photos of child sexual abuse

On October 28, 2024, it became known that a British court sentenced 27-year-old Hugh Nelson to 18 years in prison for creating deepfake images with child sexual abuse. The convict sold the generated materials on the Internet.

According to the case file, Nelson, who lives in Bolton in northwest England, used Daz 3D software based on artificial intelligence to carry out criminal activities. The attacker used real pictures of children as the basis for creating deepfakes. On the sale of these images, Nelson earned about £5,000 in a year and a half (approximately $6,500 at the exchange rate on October 28, 2024). In some cases, he did work on third-party orders.

Nelson was arrested after he told an online chat to a police officer posing as an interested user that he was charging £80 (about $100) to create deepfake images of children using the photos provided. It was established that Nelson communicated with three persons, inciting them to commit sexual acts against minors. During the investigation, police officers identified suspects and victims around the world, including in, and Italy France. USA

"It is extremely alarming that Nelson was able to take ordinary photographs of children and, using artificial intelligence tools, transform them and create images of the most depraved nature for sale and distribution on the Internet," said Jeanette Smith of the Crown Prosecution Service. Britain

Nelson is found guilty of soliciting the rape of a child under the age of 13, attempting to persuade a boy under the age of 16 to commit sexual intercourse, distributing and creating indecent images, and possessing prohibited material.[1]
