Biography
1991-2022
Boris Ostrobrod and Arkady Pekarevsky founded the retailer Sela in 1991. Cousins emigrated to Israel in the early 1990s. The first Sela branded store was opened in St. Petersburg in 1997. Subsequently (in 2019), the ownership and management of the chain of stores was transferred to Melon Fashion Group.
At its peak in 2011, the network had about 600 locations, and was present in 14 countries. By the end of 2022, Sela was combining 181 stores.
In October 2010, Pekarevsky sold his 45% stake to his brother in order to focus on developing his own business - the chocolate and marzipan production of Grondard and a development project. At that time, the Sela chain already had 278 stores, including 143 own retail outlets. Experts estimated the deal at 600 million rubles.
At Sela, Pekarevsky was responsible for development in Russia, Ostrobrod - for production, design and financing.
2023: Death in a lake in Latvia
The founder of the retailer Sela Boris Ostrobrod drowned in a lake in Latvia, said his cousin and partner Arkady Pekarevsky. The deceased entrepreneur was 65 years old.
A tragic accident - I was driving a car along the lake in Latvia, the car slipped into the lake, turned over, and Borya drowned, "Pekarevsky wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, which is recognized in Russia as extremist and banned). |
Ostrobrod's son Edward confirmed the death of his father. He stated that the cause of death was a tragic accident on the road. The funeral will be held in Israel.
Boris Ostrobrod has created a company that can be safely called a phenomenon on the Russian market, says Ivan Fedyakov, general director of the InfoLine information and analytical agency.
It was one of the first large domestic companies to deal with the full cycle from production to product sales. Moreover, for a long time it was possible to hide that this company is domestic. Many consumers thought that this company was European, since both store design and clothing design, and in general, the approach to work was fully focused on the best standards of international practices, he said.[1] |
