2023: Sentence - 9 years in prison for illegal plastic surgery
On December 14, 2023, the Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg sentenced in a criminal case against surgeon Guram Papiashvili. For illegal plastic surgery, resulting in the death of the patient, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison. Anesthesiologist Sergei Koptsov was also convicted as part of the case.
According to court materials, Papiashvili, being the founder and surgeon of the private clinic Uni Dent Primorskaya LLC, in 2020 persuaded the patient to surgically rejuvenate the upper and middle face by conducting platysmoplasty, tightening and lower blepharoplasty. Koptsov, who holds the position of anesthesiologist-resuscitator at St. Petersburg State Budgetary Institution "City Hospital No. 40 of the Kurortny District," was invited to take part in the operation for a monetary reward of at least 10 thousand rubles. The cost of the procedures amounted to 94,500 rubles. At the same time, Uni Dent Primorskaya did not have a license to provide services in the areas of plastic surgery, as well as anesthesiology and resuscitation.
During the illegal operation, propofol was used to provide general anesthesia, and lidocaine was used for local anesthesia. These drugs were administered to the patient throughout the operation, that is, within 3-5 hours. At the same time, doctors doubled the dosage of lidocaine, as a result of which the patient experienced lidocaine poisoning in combination with the side effect of propofol. After surgery, the woman's condition began to deteriorate sharply - she showed signs of shock. Papiashvili and Koptsov first tried to treat the patient at home, but this therapy did not give results. The woman in a state of shock was taken to the Federal State Budgetary Institution National Medical Research Center named after V.A. Almazov"," Ministry of Health Russia where her death occurred on June 1, 2020.
The defendants in the case were found guilty of providing services that did not meet safety requirements and resulted in the death of a person (clauses a, in part 2 of article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), and Papiashvili also in the illegal acquisition and storage of drugs on a large scale (part 2 of article 28 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Papiashvili received 9 years in a general regime colony with a ban on the right to carry out medical activities for a period of 2.5 years. Koptsov was sentenced to 5 years probation with a probationary period of 5 years with a ban on the right to carry out medical activities for a period of 2.5 years[1]
