2024: Sentence - prison term for torturing patients
On January 30, 2024, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Rostov-on-Don announced the verdict in a criminal case of torture in the prison interregional tuberculosis hospital No. 19 (MOTB-19). Three employees of this institution were sent to the colony - Colonel of the Internal Service Alexander Lyakh, as well as senior lieutenants Daria Pozdnyakova and Anastasia Potorochina.
According to the case file, MOTB-19 patients were unreasonably tied to beds for a long time, which caused many to develop pressure sores. According to the investigation, Lyakh gave the corresponding instructions to the deputy head of the hospital to the head of the psychiatric department Pozdnyakova. She, in turn, attracted a psychiatrist to Potorochina to enter inaccurate information into patients' medical records in order to conceal traces of illegal actions.
A criminal case against these persons was initiated in September 2021 by the regional department of the TFR. It is said that bullying of prisoners was practiced in the hospital throughout 2020. 40 people were injured, and two of them died due to injuries. One of the dead arrived at the hospital with a fracture of the spine and four ribs, but these injuries were not recorded in the institution. The second died shortly after being removed from a piece of skin that had died due to a pressure ulcer.
The defendants were found guilty of organizing abuse of office, abuse of office and complicity in this crime (part 3 of article 33 and paragraph "a," paragraph "c" part 3 of article 286, paragraph "a," paragraph "c" part 3 of article 286, part 5 of article 33 and paragraph "a," paragraph "c" part 3 of article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Lyakh was sentenced to 7 years 6 months of imprisonment with serving a term in a general regime correctional colony, with deprivation of the right to hold positions in the public service and in local self-government bodies related to the exercise of the functions of a representative of the authorities, as well as organizational, administrative and administrative powers for a period of 3 years. Pozdnyakova and Potorochina received 6 years and 5 years respectively with serving their sentences in a general regime correctional colony.[1]
