2024: Indonesia's presidential election win
March 20, 2024 in Indonesia announced the results of voting in the presidential elections. The victory was won by the country's Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who won more than 50% of the vote. Former head of state Joko Widodo could not run for a third term and supported Subianto.
Prabowo Subianto was born on October 17, 1951 in Jakarta. In 1970 he entered the Indonesian Military Academy in Magelang and graduated in 1974. Two years later, he was appointed commander of the Group 1 Special Forces, and in the early 1990s became a major general and commander of the Group 3 Special Forces. In 1998, he took the post of head of the command of the strategic reserve of the Ground Forces. In October 2019, President Joko Widodo appointed Subianto Minister of Defense of Indonesia. Subianto is in business: he notably acquired the pulp company Kiani Kertas, renaming it afterwards Kertas Nusantara. The Nusantara Group, owned by Subianto, includes more than 25 firms, including Nusantara Energy (oil, natural gas and coal extraction), Tidar Kerinci Agung (palm oil plantations) and Jaladri Nusantara (fishing).
Indonesia's general election was held on February 14, 2024, and it took more than a month to count the results. Subianto won 58.6% of the vote. Former Jakarta governor Anis Baswedan received 24.9% of the vote, while former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo received 16.5%.
The Chairman PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA Xi Jinping sent Subianto a telegram congratulating him on his election as President of Indonesia. Xi Jinping noted that he attaches great importance to the development of Sino-Indonesian relations and expects to make joint efforts with the president-elect to achieve even greater results.[1]
