2022: Victory in the presidential election of Costa Rica
In early April 2022, former World Bank economist Rodrigo Chavez won the presidential election in Costa Rica. He beat his rival Jose Maria Figueres, who had previously led the country. In total, about 3.5 million residents of Costa Rica had the right to vote in the elections. No violations recorded during the elections were reported. This was reported by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Costa Rica.
According to almost all polling stations, as of April 3, 2022, conservative economist Rodrigo Chavez, a representative of the centrist Social Democratic Progress party, won 53% of the vote against 47% from former President Jose Figueres Ferrer. The politician studied in the United States, from 2019 to 2020 he was the Minister of Finance of Costa Rica. In his victory speech, Chavez said he took the result with humility and called for unity to solve problems such as unemployment and a growing budget deficit.
Figueres Ferrer from the centrist party "National Liberation," admitted his defeat, as the results began to flow. Ferrera was the leader in the first round of voting on February 6, 2022, and Chavez was the second. None of them came close to 40% of the vote needed to avoid the second round. Ferrera congratulated Chavez and wished him all the best, adding that he still believes that Costa Rica is in a deep crisis, and he is ready to help his state recover.
According to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Costa Rica, more than 42 per cent of eligible voters did not participate in the elections, indicating a lack of enthusiasm among Costa Ricans for candidates. The current president of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, has already congratulated Rodrigo Chavez as the elected president. The inauguration of Chavez is scheduled for May 8, 2022.[1]
