2026: Absentee sentence - 11 years in prison for embezzlement of 3 billion rubles

On February 9, 2026, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow sentenced the former chairman of the board of directors of the bankrupt Rosenergobank Konstantin Schwartz. He received 11 years in prison in absentia in the case of embezzlement of more than 3 billion rubles.

According to the investigation, Schwartz developed a scheme for withdrawing funds from Rosenergobank under the guise of lending to corporate clients. Instead of the amount necessary for the borrower, he was asked to issue a larger loan - for example, instead of the required 400 million rubles, the client had to take 1.4 billion rubles. The difference (servicing the "extra" funds was allegedly taken over by the bank itself) was transferred to a one-day company that promised to supply this or that product. In fact, the money was stolen, since the performers "obviously could not supply goods or provide services."

In April 2017, the Bank of Russia revoked Rosenergobank's banking license. The regulator said that the financial institution had problems due to the use of an extremely risky business model, low quality of management and assets. The bank's activities showed signs of unfair behavior of management and owners, expressed in the withdrawal of assets. However, the board and owners of Rosenergobank did not take effective measures to normalize their activities.

The state prosecutor requested for Schwartz 11 years in prison for a combination of three episodes of fraud on an especially large scale (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code). It was this punishment that the court determined (with stay in a general regime colony). In addition, a fine of 2.5 million rubles was imposed on the defendant. The term of punishment will be calculated from the moment of detention or extradition of the convict to Russia.[1]
