In mid-June 2024, the former Chief information officer of Webster University in St. Louis admitted that he had resold equipment purchased for the university for over $2.1 million for years.

Former Chief information officer of Webster University in St. Louis admitted to reselling equipment purchased for the university for years

As director of information technology at the university, Simpson was responsible for repairing and replacing faulty IT equipment. From about November 29, 2018, Simpson began implementing a fraudulent enrichment scheme at the expense of the university and its equipment supplier. After receiving permission to purchase hundreds of pieces of IT equipment, Simpson sold the equipment to a third party. Thus, Simpson appropriated at least a million dollars from the university cash register.

He also fraudulently received 56 pieces of equipment from an IT supplier to replace previously received allegedly faulty equipment. Simpson then sold both the original equipment and the one sent by the replacement supplier. According to Simpson's testimony, the supplier sent IT equipment totaling $780 thousand to the university. Thus, Simpson embezzled a total of $2.1 million for IT equipment owned by the university and its supplier.

Simpson will be sentenced on September 17, 2024. Charges of wire fraud can be punishable by up to 20 years in prison or a fine of $250,000. The Simpson case was being investigated. During FBI this investigation, both Simpson's former employer and the IT provider actively cooperated with law enforcement.[1]
