2020: Dismissal from a post of the head of National Bank of Ukraine
On July 1, 2020 the head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Yakov Smoly resigned because of "the systematic political pressure". It is reported on the regulator website.
Smoly submitted the resignation letter at own will to the president of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky. He explained the solution with the political pressure upon National Bank which, according to him, was performed for a long time.
The resignation I want to warn against further attempts to undermine institutional bases of the Central bank of Ukraine — he said. |
The board of National Bank also urged the president of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, the government and politicians "to interact effectively with the central bank" and to give it "the chance to perform the functions assigned to the central bank by the constitution of Ukraine and the law of Ukraine "About the National Bank of Ukraine".
Duties of the head of the National Bank will be temporarily fulfilled by the first deputy chairman of the board Ekaterina Rozhkova. Smoly actual headed National Bank of Ukraine since 2017 after departure of the former head of the regulator Valeria Hontareva.[1]
The former prime minister of Ukraine Alexey Goncharuk said that Smoliya's leaving will become a hard blow for national economy.
Possible loss of the independence by National Bank will give up as a bad job investments. While the NBU was independent, the investor knew that the Ukrainian hryvnia will behave it is predicted. The instability of hryvnia will strike each of us — he told in an interview of Message of Ukraine. |
At the same time in Administration of the President of Ukraine of Vladimir Zelensky noted that preserving of independence of National Bank is a priority for the authorities.
In the middle of June, 2020 the committee of the Verkhovna Rada concerning finance, tax and customs policy criticized actions of National Bank for insufficient course stability and growth inhibition of economy.
