2024: Sentence - 23 years in prison for child molestation

In September 2024, the Ivanovo District Court sentenced Alexander Tsymbalyuk, the former director of a correctional boarding school in the Ivanovo region. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for molesting underage pupils of the boarding school. Among the victims were orphans and children left without parental care. The trial was conducted behind closed doors, which is explained by the special sensitivity of the case and the protection of the interests of the victims.

According to Izvestia, the investigation of this case began by chance - during the investigative actions on charges of the former governor of the Ivanovo region, Mikhail Me, who was detained in 2020 on suspicion of embezzlement of ₽700 million. During the investigation, investigators came across facts indicating sexual crimes committed by Tsymbalyuk against the pupils of the boarding school, which he led from 2001 to 2011. As a result, the ex-director was detained in April 2021 in Dagestan.

According to the investigation, Tsymbalyuk committed violent acts of a sexual nature for several years. Most of the victims are children with intellectual and mental development disorders who were registered at the dispensary. Within the framework of the case, several dozen episodes of child molestation were considered, but the exact number of episodes was not disclosed. According to the court, initially in 2021, Tsymbalyuk was charged with three episodes, which were then expanded.

During the investigation, another suspect in this case was also detained - businessman Nikolai Bukhonin, who served as deputy chairman of the council of the Assembly of Peoples of Russia. However, he did not live to see the trial: in January 2022, Bukhonin was seriously injured in a pre-trial detention center and died, and Moscow investigators did not find criminal signs in his death.[1]
