2026: The court ordered Vitaly Skortsov to pay the patient 650 thousand rubles for a napkin forgotten in the chest
The court ordered plastic surgeon Vitaly Skortsov. pay a patient from Tula Ekaterina Popova compensation in the amount of 650 thousand rubles. The doctor was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm as a result of a medical error made during reconstructive surgery on the breast. This was stated by the lawyer of the victim Asad Yusufov on February 24, 2026.
According to Yusufov, the woman underwent mastectomy (removal of the left breast) due to cancer. After completing the treatment, she turned to surgeon Vitaly Skvortsov, who had previously operated on her at the cancer center, for a recovery operation to install an implant. Surgery took place in one of the clinics in St. Petersburg.
Within six months after the operation, the patient's condition was assessed as satisfactory, but then swelling, itching and inflammation appeared. According to the lawyer, the surgeon recommended antibiotic therapy, linking the symptoms to the reaction to the implant. The deterioration, accompanied by blackening of tissues and purulent discharge, forced the patient to go to another medical institution.
During an emergency operation in the new clinic, the implant was removed. Medical intervention revealed the presence of a gauze wipe left in the chest area during the previous surgery. The foreign body was in the tissues for more than a year, which led to their necrosis and the impossibility of primary wound closure. As a result, the woman was left without reconstructed breasts.
Lawyer Asad Yusufov noted that, despite the court decision that came into force, compensation has not yet been paid, since the defendant disputes the decision and does not recognize the fact of a medical error. The defense intends to file a new lawsuit to recover 20 million rubles from the surgeon for the treatment and rehabilitation of the patient.[1]
