2023: Appointment as President of Vietnam
On February 23, 2023, the Vietnamese National Assembly appointed Wo Wang Thuong as Vietnam's new president, a major reshuffle in the country's top leadership amid a wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign. He became the youngest president in Vietnam's political history.
In an extraordinary session held on February 21, 2023, lawmakers elected Wo Wang Thuong, 52, after the ruling Communist Party nominated him for president. He was elected 98.38% of the vote, according to the Vietnamese parliament's online portal.
After being confirmed as head of state, Waugh Wang Thuong took the oath of office. In his first speech to the Vietnamese parliament as president, Thuong said he would vigorously continue to fight corruption in the country. As of February 2023, corruption is one of the serious conditions impeding Vietnam's effective development and poses a huge social threat. Therefore, the development of legal mechanisms for combating corruption becomes a significant and urgent problem in the development of modern Vietnamese society and the state.
Wo Van Thuong graduated from the National University of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City at the Department of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, and began a political career in the country's Communist Youth Union. In 2007 he became the first secretary of the Communist Youth Union of Vietnam, in 2011 a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, in 2016 he was a member of the Politburo.
According to local media, the previous leader of Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, resigned in mid-January 2023. He led the country from April 2021, and from 2016 to 2021 he was prime minister. The politician made this decision due to a corruption scandal. From January 18, 2023, until the election of Wo Wang Thiong, Vice President Wo Thi An Xuan served as the country's leader.[1]
