2025: Charge of selling cyber weapons secrets

On October 14, 2025, Australian citizen Peter Williams, a former top manager of an American IT company, was formally charged in the United States. According to the US Department of Justice, he transferred classified information from the developer of cyber weapons, which is a government contractor, to Russia from 2022 to 2025.

According to Reuters, the former general manager of Trenchant Williams, who lives in Washington, is accused of transferring cyber secrets to a Russian recipient. Trenchant is part of the defense contractor L3Harris. According to investigators, Williams stole eight commercial secrets for subsequent sale in the Russian Federation. Illegal activities were carried out from April 2022 to June 2025.

The accused received an income of $1.3 million. Authorities are demanding the confiscation of his property, including a house in Washington, 22 watches of various brands, Louis Vuitton bags, Moncler jackets, Tiffany jewelry and cryptocurrency assets in accounts with seven financial institutions.

The court materials do not contain specifics about the nature of the stolen commercial secrets. As it became known to TechCrunch from a representative of the US Department of Justice, by the end of October 2025, Williams is not in custody.

The former manager held high positions at Trenchant, whose work is focused on studying zero-day vulnerabilities - implicit software flaws that developers do not know about. This company creates hacker software tools for the intelligence services of five states.

In October 2025, TechCrunch reported an investigation into a Trenchant data breach related to Google Chrome hacking tools. Evidence linking this incident to the Williams case has not been established.[1]
