2024: Detention in Illegal Organ Recovery Case

Former Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine Mikhail Zagriychuk and ten doctors were detained on suspicion of involvement in the illegal extraction of organs from people for subsequent transplantation. This was reported on June 14, 2024 by the Ukrainian edition of LB.ua, citing informed sources.

After resigning from the post of deputy head of the Ministry of Health, Zagriychuk headed the department of transplantation and surgery of abdominal organs at the Institute. hearts The remaining persons involved in the case are employees of this medical institution, the Volyn Regional Clinical Hospital and the Central City Clinical Hospital of Kyiv.

According to the newspaper, the detainees are charged with "organizing a scheme for the illegal seizure of anatomical materials from people in a helpless state and other dependence on offenders for the purpose of their further transplantation." The investigation believes that doctors sold places in the queue for organ transplantation operations and received money for manipulating the queue of transplant coordinators.

The detainees declared suspicion under Part 1, 2 of Art. 255 (creation and management of a criminal organization), Part 5 of Art. 143 (violation of the procedure for transplantation) and Part 3 of Art. 362 (unauthorized actions with computer information) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, - writes LB.ua.

Earlier, the facts of shadow organ trade with the participation of high-ranking officials have already been revealed in the country. According to the source of the publication, the detention of so many transplantologists led to a temporary suspension of transplant operations in Ukraine, since doctors fear to state the death of patients.

According to the materials of the criminal case, "black transplantologists" removed not only organs, but also other human tissues and cells for subsequent illegal sale. The defendants in the case face up to 12 years in prison.[1]
