On February 10, 2020 the Honeywell company announced release of the solution Experion PKS IT Highly Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE), the updated technology which centralizes up to 80% of the IT infrastructure used at project development. Thanks to this solution industrial enterprises will be able to reduce costs for project implementation and their lifecycle, more effectively use skills of personnel and to provide coordinated management with physical and cyber security.
According to the company, Experion PKS IT HIVE is the solution designed to help industrial enterprises to get rid of a binding of workloads to controllers. Instead the freedom of choice and flexible opportunities for start of workloads on an object, in a remote data processing center or in the environment combining both options is provided. Due to centralization of IT infrastructure and reduction of volume of the network and computing resources necessary for start of loadings on an object, customers can reduce the maintenance volume, expenses on upgrade and to exempt the production engineers from labor-consuming administration that those could focus on types of activity, more profitable to business, including optimization of technical processes. Besides, centralization helps to eliminate not used computing infrastructure, with benefit to apply technologies of virtualization and forces of experts, using the checked protocols to reduce risks of cyber security.
Customers can place the workloads now where it is the most profitable from the practical and strategic points of view. It will allow them to reduce IT infrastructure on an object and to concentrate management of IT resources and cyber defense in the uniform, private and safe center. This solution allows customers to see all infrastructure and to manage it using a uniform panel of monitoring in any convenient location through a network tunnel for which the existing global networks, but not expensive selected infrastructure are used. Remote objects are protected from effects of possible interruptions in work of global networks.
Experion PKS IT HIVE is one of three elements of the Experion PKS HIVE platform in which the principles, the software and network components of a technique of project implementation of Honeywell of LEAP are used to separate managing applications from the physical equipment, and controllers — from physical input/output devices. It allows to reduce time, to reduce costs and risks at development and deployment of management systems and also to use simpler modular nodes.
Other two components are Experion PKS IO HIVE and Experion PKS Control HIVE. Experion PKS IO HIVE flexibly distributes resources of input-output and management owing to what the management system becomes natural continuation of technology equipment and facilitates implementation of modular approach and side-by-side execution of projects. In Experion PKS Control HIVE unique approach using containers of management for ensuring flexibility and standardization of platforms of hardware of management, the choice of their physical placement and simplification of development of management tools is implemented.
2019: The high-integrated virtual environment of Experion PKS HIVE
On July 2, 2019 the Honeywell company provided the high-integrated virtual environment of Experion PKS (HIVE). The solution is the next stage of development of a flagship product of APCS company of Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS). Experion PKS HIVE uses the principles of a technique of project implementation of Honeywell of LEAP, the software and network technologies to separate managing applications from the physical equipment, and controllers — from physical input/output devices. It allows to reduce time, to reduce costs and risks at development and deployment of management systems and also to apply simpler modular developments. Besides, this solution changes approach to service of management systems during all lifecycle due to transfer of daily support of servers in a uniform data processing center where experts using the approved protocols work on cyber defense strengthening that engineers could focus on optimization of management systems.

As noted in Honeywell, Experion PKS HIVE includes three components — IT HIVE, IO HIVE and Control HIVE — which can be used both separately, and together with each other in combination with the existing systems and the customer's infrastructure:
- Experion PKS IT HIVE provides centralization to 80% of the IT infrastructure which is traditionally applied at design for cutting of costs for project implementation and its lifecycle, more effective use of skills and coordinated management with physical and cyber defense in enterprise scales.
- Experion PKS IO HIVE flexibly distributes resources of input-output and management owing to what the management system becomes natural continuation of technology equipment and facilitates implementation of modular approach and side-by-side execution of projects.
- Experion PKS Control HIVE implements approach using containers of management for ensuring flexibility and standardization of the platform of hardware of management, localization of strategy of management and development tools of applications. When using several physical controllers working as a part of an APCS of Experion PKS Control HIVE, application development becomes simpler thanks to automatic balancing of their loading.

According to the statement of the developer, Experion PKS HIVE displays funds of input-output of signals for the periphery and makes them completely available to any controller. At the same time computing loading is distributed between separate physical controllers which finally look as one controller. Such solution allows to distribute seamlessly computing resources between objects and data processing centers.
As of July, 2019 the Experion PKS IT HIVE and IO HIVE components are already available to the order. The beginning of deliveries is planned for the first quarter 2020. The Experion PKS Control HIVE component will be available in the second half of 2020.
2016: Functions based on IoT in Experion PKS Orion
On August 10, 2016 the division "Industrial automation" announced Honeywell corporations release of an update of the version of an APCS of Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) Orion.
In its structure of function, the technologists of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) created on the platform. The product will help industrial enterprises to optimize implementation processes of projects of automation, to reduce time of commissioning of guidance loops, to minimize operational risks and to protect investments in intellectual property, providing at the same time support of advanced technologies.
In an APCS of Experion PKS Orion the expanded set of the innovative solutions for improvement of implementation processes of projects and commissioning, upgrade of infrastructure of a management system, observance of requirements of standards and expansion of interaction and also providing opportunities for continual improvement of technologies is implemented.
The new version of Experion PKS Orion in addition optimizes implementation processes of projects with the help of the concept of LEAP in our most advanced open and safe management system. The main improvements, such as the automated input of devices in operation, are capable to increase cardinally efficiency of design and to display the automation system out of limits of a critical path of the project. As a part of improvements of Experion PKS Orion:
- The automated input of devices in operation. This function, is an important part of project implementation by a technique of LEAP and automatically ties the configuration of control algorithms created in a safe cloud of Honeywell to the instrumentations connected to any channel of universal modules of input-output that allows to reduce time of input of guidance loops in operation from o'clock to minutes.
- Integration of the electrical power systems with process control systems. Experion PKS Orion is the first distributed control system with support of technology of control and management of the electrical power systems, including support of requirements of the IEC 61850 standard.
- Multiple parameter advanced management in the controller. Through Experion Profit Controller multiple parameter anticipatory management is transferred from operating system Microsoft to the operating system of controllers - Experion Control Execution Environment (CEE) and works directly in the C300 controller and a node of the environment of management of applications (ACE).
- Support of all wireless standards, including WirelessHART. By means of the version of Experion PKS Orion the wireless network of OneWireless will be improved. The versions of updating included in structure represent solutions for support of the ISA 100 Wilreless, WirelessHART and Wi-fi standards within a single wireless network.
- The Premium virtualization platform of the next generation with function of fault tolerance. The fault tolerance is one of the main features of the environment of virtualization of Experion PKS and essential aspect of a technique of LEAP. In its basis — optimization of technology of high readiness due to continuous protection of the virtual machines (VM) in case of refusal a host.
- The advanced solution IIoT based on a PLC. Experion PKS Orion continues an initiative of Honeywell of implementation of readiness for IIoT ("IIoT-ready") due to use of the general ChMI and a technique of LEAP for new PLCs of Honeywell ControlEdge. As a result customers receive the excellent solution with the protected data exchange and close integration with devices of different producers which guarantees convenience of a configuration, efficiency at operation and reduction of operating costs.
- The automated integration of packaged solutions of third-party suppliers by means of SCADA. The possibility of the automated integration is based on application for integration of a PLC of a technique of LEAP — rational approach to project implementation. Thanks to enhanced capabilities of integration of third-party PLCs less efforts for a configuration and validation of interfaces of supervisory control and data collection (SCADA) are required: the need for corrections and repeated testing at making changes in the program decreases, the risk of violation of the works schedule because of late changes decreases and the problem of inconsistency of a configuration is fixed.
Among other features there are versions of Experion PKS Orion:
- universal remote modular cabinets;
- selection of alarm signals, critical in terms of security;
- updates of the C300 controller and ACE environment;
- the optimized modules UIO-II; advanced technologies of wireless access and management of identification;
- the improved data collection through Profibus;
- new module Ethernet Interface Module (EIM);
- Ethernet IP support;
- the updated mechanism of integration of SCADA into the controller of telecontrol (RTU) and expanded solutions for transition to new technologies without stopping productions.
2014: There was a release of Experion PKS Orion
On June 19, 2014 the Honeywell Process Solutions company announced release of the version of the automated process control system (APCS)[1].
Features of an APCS of Experion PKS Orion - support of means of virtualization, the mechanism of universal channels and cloud computing for remote project development and management of technical processes. The technology of universal channels allows operators quickly and to remotely change a configuration of input-output channels (both for technology equipment, and for security systems) without additional hardware and also to use the standardized cabinets. Use of universal modules of input-output allows to lower requirements to the equipment and to reduce the taken place and also to quickly configure channels of several types.
Honeywell's Experion Orion Console, (2014)
The Experion SCADA system simplifies setup of thousands of items of equipment and improves utilization properties at the expense of the advanced human-computer interface. Setup of a configuration of the equipment requires smaller efforts thanks to application of the templates containing not only points of SCADA now, but also all operator interface. Besides, the style of a design of a dashboard and filters which can be selected depending on a solvable task direct attention of the operator to the most important aspects.
On assurances of developers, Experion PKS Orion is the first platform using a blade servers for expanded virtualization. Use of technologies of virtualization gives the chance to delay the final decision on requirements to the equipment that allows to receive more relevant configuration of the equipment at the time of commissioning of the project.
Among the other changes providing flexibility of design and management of transactions:
- additional options of connection with support of Profibus PA and Ethernet IP,
- upgrade of outdated controllers for protection of intellectual investments of customers
- the unified transactions on the basis of events of a distributed architecture of systems (DSA)
- routing of system alarm signals.
2013: Properties. Effects of implementation
According to information for December, 2013 Experion provides to personnel the unified access to parameters of technology processes, commercial requirements and enterprise asset management. It is the only automation system which concentrates attention on personnel of the enterprise and the most effective use of his knowledge.
Implementation of Experion attracts:

This technology is created taking into account future development and allows to manage all main aspects of production — from optimization of production before decrease in operating costs to 30%. A system is constructed on the basis of standard architecture of distributed control using the technologies developed by Consortium on management of emergency situations (ASM — Abnormal Situation Management), and provides integration with means of protecting of production and computer systems in scales of all enterprise.
2011: Support of technologies of virtualization in a reference platform of PKS
The Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) corporation announced in August, 2011 implementation of support of technologies of virtualization in the reference platform of an APCS of Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) for distributed control systems and applications of SCADA that made Honeywell the supplier of the universal solution of virtualization for manufacturing industry.
On many modern productions of a condition of management of technology processes require use of separate servers for the solution of different applied tasks. Technologies of virtualization fix this problem, allowing to use one server for simultaneous placement of several operating systems and execution of a number of applications. Such approach also increases reliability thanks to isolation of these operating systems from changes in hardware that, finally, is expressed in decrease in operating costs, says Honeywell.
The proposed HPS solutions in the field of virtualization are developed with participation of VMware — the world product provider and systems on the basis of technologies of virtualization. These solutions allow manufacturing enterprises to lower requirements to computing platforms and to reduce the impact of changes in hardware on operating systems, to simplify general management by a system, to increase availability and reliability and also to accelerate recovery after failures.
As noted in Honeywell, the popularity of virtualization in the field of information technologies promptly grows — so, the recent research of Gartner company showed that now technologies of virtualization are applied more than for 40% of servers, and by 2015 this share will increase up to 75%. 2003: Completion of development and beginning of implementation of Experion PKS
In 2003 Honeywell company finished development and began implementation of distributed control system of Experion PKS (Process Knowledge System is the system of knowledge of process) which is based:
- on the analysis of functioning of the automated object in the normal and emergency modes;
- on modeling of the processes happening in an object;
- on accounting of experience of operators and technologists on management of an object.[2]
