2019: Creation of maps of the cities with centimetric accuracy

At the end of April, 2019 the South Korean telecommunication giant SK Telecom announced use of a 5G networks for creation of HD maps of the cities with a centimetric accuracy which will be updated in real time. First of all the operator is going to create maps of three Korean cities surrounding the international airport Incheon-Songdo, Yondzhong and Cheongn.

SK Telecom signed the agreement with Management of the free economic zone Incheon, i.e. for the first time in the world legislatively undertook to support maps of such scale. The operator claims that cards will cover the territory of 132.9 sq.km and to include lanes and restrictions of speed to provide safe movement along roads.

SK Telecom will use solution 5G of Dynamic Data Platform for creation and updating of cards. Data of observations of roads will arrive from the modern systems of the help to the driver based on a 5G which will be installed on public transport and government cars. For the analysis of such huge information volume the telecom operator and administration of the cities create the special center within wider initiative "the smart city".

Though modern smartphones can send and obtain data on location with an accuracy of 1 meter, access to services of position fix with an accuracy of centimeter requires the external GNSS receiver. However these receivers usually big and expensive as use technology under the name kinematics in real time.

In 2018 in a pilot project of SK Telecom tested the services of a 5G connected with vehicles in the city of Hvason. The 3D map of HD allowing two cars to coordinate at the same time the movement became a project deliverable. Each of cars communicated with surrounding devices on trial 5G network, estimating a condition of the road and preventing accidents with other vehicles.[1]
