The communication framework of Aastra 400 is expected the enterprises of medium and small business (SMB) having from four to 256 users. Such systems of the previous generation hereinafter were referred to as branch exchanges. The present communication system includes communication servers, the user terminals, the software and mobile solutions and also messaging applications for support of functions of unified communications.

Aastra 400 not only keeps in traditional telephone communication, but also is focused on the unified services (Unified Communications) that means providing all services (a voice communication, e-mail, video, a chat, etc.) on a unified basis. The station has different connectivities to public telephone networks — on analog, digital (ISDN) or SIP lines.

For creation of the innovative solutions technologies VoIP, SIP are used and XML. The organization of wireless jobs as in office of the company (on technologies DECT, SIP DECT and WLAN), and out of its (FMC technology) due to use of the professional built-in solutions of mobility is possible. The station supports the broad range of the terminals integrated into a system (wireless telephones DECT, stationary, program and mobile phones).

Aastra 400 consists of three communication servers (Aastra 415, 430 and 470) for service of the companies of the different sizes. Each such server manages trib-in and external connections and also provides availability of all telephony functions and other communication services. For switching with IP telephone to traditional analog or digital trunking there are built-in media gateways (Media Gateway).

In the companies with several branches communication servers of Aastra 400 can be easily united in a single system, at the same time the full range of functions will be available to all users in all branches. A wide number of the interface payments allows to use traditional analog and digital terminals and also to be connected to public service networks through analog or ISDN lines. All three communication servers are equipped with the same system software and provide all functions.
