2022: Launch of a smartphone-controlled spinal cord stimulation system
Abbott launches implantable spinal cord stimulation system with smartphone controls
Abbott released Eterna's implantable spinal cord stimulation system (SCS) in December 2022. It provides treatment for chronic pain.
Abbott said in a press release that Eterna represents the smallest SCS system on the market for December 2022 for such indications.
The Eterna system uses Abbott's proprietary low-dose BurstDR stimulation. BurstDR mimics natural shooting patterns in the brain to provide pain relief. According to Abbott, this wave-form SKS technology provides 23% greater pain reduction compared to traditional wave techniques.
Abbott said it developed Eterna based on extensive research examining the unmet needs of people living with chronic pain. Scientists have found that people need a smaller implant for convenience and to reduce the need to charge the device daily or weekly. As a result, the company designed Eterna to charge the device less than five times a year in normal use.
The Eterna system is paired with Abbott's Xtend energy technology, the company said. This optimises the charging process, reducing it to five recharges a year when using a wireless charger. In addition, Eterna uses Abbott's TotalScan MRI technology. TotalScan allows for full-body MRI scans for those who require access to improved diagnosis and healthcare. According to the developers, Eterna is designed as a platform with the ability to modernize, and this allows you to adapt to future innovations without replacing the implant.
Abbott offers iPhone integration for Eterna. Abbott's patient-centric mobile app supports real-time updates to battery life and charging status. In addition, this data can be sent to an Apple personal or provided by Abbott.[1]
