2020: Announcement
At the beginning of March, 2020 the Ampere Computing company founded by the former president of Intel Rene James released the Ampere Altra processor. This product, according to developers, twice quicker than solutions of Intel.
The new chip is held for use in the equipment of the data centers and systems started on network edge. The solution is constructed on 7-nanometer technology process and based on 64-bit architecture of ARM.
A single-crystal system allows to place up to 80 computing cores that as declare in Ampere Computing, is the highest rate for commercial central processors by the beginning of March, 2020.
The senior vice president for the products Ampere Computing Jeff Wittich in a conversation with the SiliconANGLE edition said that Altra is 223% faster, than the comparable Intel Xeon processor Platinum 8280.
Ampere also applies for advantages regarding energy efficiency. In a startup say that 80-core Altra has the settlement thermal power (TDP) up to 210 W in comparison with 205 W at 28-core Xeon Platinum 8280. Thanks to it reduced energy consumption is provided.
The controller of memory of Ampere processors supports up to eight channels and will be able to work with the modules DDR4 with a frequency over 2666 MHz. Also work in dual-processor configurations using CCIX over PCIe 4.0 will be supported.
In Ampere Computing other design approach of cores of the chip in comparison with Intel and AMD was used. While high-performance server processors of giants can usually work with two processor flows counting on a core, Altra supports only one — such design feature, according to developers, provides the improved protection against cracking.[1]
