2018: Cessation of production of routers
On April 26, 2018 Apple officially announced cessation of production of wireless routers. Though the company itself does not state the reason of the solution, data of analysts show that AirPort line was never in high demand.
The AppleInsider edition received the e-mail in which the company confirms the leaving from the market of WiFi-routers from Apple. After the sale of a remaining balance of AirPort, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule (there are $99, $199 and $299 respectively) new devices will not be delivered in shops. At the same time Apple intends to continue release of program updates for error correction and security of this network equipment.
Apple did not exclude return to the market of routers if the company decides that it will be able to have significant effect on its development.
Apple published the white paper with the recommendation about the choice of the router for its gadgets. She suggests to use routers with support of Wi-fi 802.11ac, enciphering of WPA2, MIMO.
The American producer of consumer electronics officially announced leaving from the market of routers more than a year later after disbandment of the relevant division. His employees were transferred to other projects, including to development of set-top boxes of Apple TV. "Apple" routers were not updated since 2013.
According to the research agency IDC, Apple never entered into top five of the world market of routers. Possibly, the flat demand on AirPort devices also induced the company to the termination of their sales.
The first AirPort was not really ours, we purchased it — AppleInsider told a source in Apple — the Company very long supported him even after we created own router, reorganized division, and some of the children who were engaged in development of the platform were twice detached.[1] |
