iMac is a family of monoblock computers. Apple The first device from this series was introduced in 1998.
2020: Glass with nanostructure and SSD is now in base. Apple released a new iMac
On August 4, 2020, Apple updated the iMac line. Notable innovations include a screen with nanotexture that prevents glare from appearing on displays under any lighting conditions, while leaving colors bright and saturated.
The Retina 5K display received True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the color temperature of the display according to the lighting.
Apple compared the new computer to the previous generation iMac with an 8-core processor and noted the advantages of the first:
- The number of plugins in Logic Pro X is up to 65% more.
- Encoding in 8K ProRes in Final Cut Pro X is up to 40% faster.
- Rendering with Arnold in Autodesk Maya - up to 35% faster.
- Compilation in Xcode - up to 25% faster.
- HD FaceTime resolution increased from 720p to 1080p.
The new iMac comes with 10th generation Intel 6- and 8-core processors, and for the first time a 10-core processor with Turbo Boost technology up to 5 GHz.
iMac the 2020 model year, it is equipped with the Apple T2 Security Chip, developed by Apple for fast encryption of data stored on an SSD drive in order to protect them. In addition, the chip checks the integrity of the software that is loaded while the device is turned on. Thus, the new 27-inch iMac, like any other Mac with a T2 Security Chip, is characterized by a high level of protection of storage and boot processes, the manufacturer claims.
In the 21.5-inch version of iMac, the SSD () is now SSD available in basic configuration. Customers will still be able to order a computer with a Fusion Drive hybrid drive.
Presented in early August 2020, the iMac went on sale at a price of 170 thousand rubles. This version includes the 6-core Intel Core i5 processor, AMD Radeon Pro 5300 graphics card, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB HDD.[1]
2018: A mistake similar to the "blue death screen"
In July 2018, it became known about technical problems in the work of iMac Pro - the most powerful and expensive Apple computer at that time.
More and more messages began to appear on social networks and forums in which users complain of a spontaneous reboot of iMac. As a result of the error, the so-called kernel panic occurs - a critical error of the system core that causes the device to crash. It looks like a blue death screen known for Windows.
One of the most common reasons for kernel panic is the inability to find and mount the root file system. This is often a configuration error that can be fixed by manually rebooting the kernel. BLinux occurrence of kernel panic is often preceded by a state called oops.
As for iMac Pro, according to user reports, reboots occur due to a critical error in the Bridge OS operating system that underlies the T2 coprocessor.
Apparently, Apple engineers are already aware of the failure and are working on ways to eliminate it. In any case, as some users note, they noticed an upgrade of the kernel version to version 17.4.0, which changed with the release of the last update. After its installation, the effects of panic began to appear less often.
It is noted that an error can occur every day or once a week.
The dedicated T2 chip provides hardware-based computer protection and control over some subsystems, including data storage, audio, image processing, and general system management. The chip is also used in MacBook Pro laptops, so most likely kernel panic concerns Apple laptops. Users write that a failure in Bridge OS happens when the T2 chip is blocked.[2]
2017: Launch of iMac Pro - Apple's most powerful computer
On December 14, 2017, sales of iMac Pro, Apple's most powerful computer, began. The device is available, including in Russia.
iMac Pro is available in multiple configurations that use one of the four available Intel Xeon-W processors. The maximum version provides an 18-core chip with a clock frequency from 2.3 to 4.3 GHz.
The amount of RAM can be 32, 64, or 128 GB. The volume of the SSD is 1, 2, or 4 TB. The graphics component is responsible for either the Radeon Pro Vega 56 with 8 GB of video memory or the Radeon Pro Vega 64 with 16 GB.
The display is characterized by a 27-inch diagonal, a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, a brightness of 500 cd/m ² and extended color coverage. There is a 3.5 mm headphone connector, 10 Gb/s Ethernet network interface, SDXC memory card slot, four USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2 wireless modules.
In previous models of the iMac there is a special hole in the housing, opening which, you can install RAM modules. There is no such hatch in the new Apple computer, and replacing RAM is possible only with a complete disassembly of the all-in-one unit. If you attempt to manually replace a component, the user loses the warranty.
The cost of iMac Pro in the United States begins at $5 thousand and can reach $13.2 thousand. In the purchase section of iMac Pro on the Apple website, you can buy a branded computer mouse, Trackpad touchpad, VESA fastener and Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro X software.
In Russia, by December 15, 2017, only one version of the Apple professional all-in-one is available - the basic one for 380 thousand rubles.[3]
