Updating contains improvements of compatibility with Microsoft Office 2013, new methods of exchange of documents and I will support displays with permission of Retina in applications in iCloud.

One of the main innovations of a product an opportunity to share the document with other user seems provided that it will not be able to make changes in this document, and only to look at it.

Documents with password protection, spreadsheets and the presentations it being possible to save compatible to the latest version of Microsoft Office now.

In the version of Keynote for OS X there were new effects of transitions, in Numbers - new opportunities of a design, an opportunity to add headlines, enhanced capabilities of sorting of tables, and in Pages - new tools for editing images and creation of charts.

Updating considers wishes of users, many of which were dissatisfied with the cut-down functionality in a packet of iWork 2013 which was released on replacement of iWork '09 at the end of last year.

For example, function of calculation of words and characters in documents returned to the new version of Pages. Apple developers removed this opportunity iWork 2013, she acted in iWork '09. Among the opportunities returned in the last update there is a function of sorting according to several columns in Numbers.

2013: Browser version

In the first decade of June, 2013 Apple announced that it works on the browser version of applications of iWork that some analysts regarded as a potential call of hegemony of office Microsoft Office programs.

Within the Worldwide Developers Conference Apple conference the head of the product iWork Roger Rosner personally held the small presentation of iWork for iCloud including three principal components: Pages text editor, editor of tables of Numbers or program of creation of the presentations Keynote.

It is interesting that it is not the first attempt of Apple to transfer work with office documents to web Wednesday. The first of them was performed within iWork.com, however, it terminated in failure in July, 2012 three years later after start when Apple finally waved on it a hand. Then the company suggested to set permanently the packet of the same name, but did not provide an opportunity to edit and send to its other users online: together it viewing the document, then its downloading and an option of commenting was offered.

iWork for iCloud, on the contrary, allows to work with the specified trio of office applications in the browser as in the operating system OS X, and Windows. A new solution allows to create and edit documents from any types of devices. The beta which became available since June 10, 2013 while it supports only iOS and OS X and also browsers Safari, Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). Mozilla Firefox iopera are not supported, however, obviously, this temporary restriction yet.

However, it is the first case when Apple suggests to work with the applications in the environment of Windows. Besides, as Rosner said, iWork allows to open and edit the files of a packet MS Office created in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint respectively.

iWork for iCloud in the productive version should enter the market at the end of 2013, however, Apple announced nothing concerning its price yet. Analysts consider that hardly this solution will become the profit generator for the company as the main competing solutions, Google Docs and Microsoft Office Web Apps, are provided free of charge.

Nevertheless, for Apple it is an important strategic step as Apple, Google and Microsoft are in permanent opposition with each other. And if Microsoft announces availability of Office Web Apps to owners, then iWork exit in the present version looks a response measure.

Experts also consider what in connection with growth of penetration of mobile devices and popularity of products of Apple of the company created by Steve Jobs can will be possible to force out Microsoft in a segment of office applications for smartphones and tablets. Also Rosner said that Apple will update iWork for OS X and iOS: they remained invariable since 2009.

Though iWork is announced by Apple as "the successor of AppleWorks (engl.)", it does not copy functionality of the AppleWorks' database and tools for drawing.

A main competitor of iWork is the packet of Microsoft Office for Mac. At this time iWork is cheaper than this packet, but does not contain equivalents of a number of the programs entering some versions of Microsoft Office.

iWork is integrated with the applications entering iLife packet. iLife is set free of charge in each new Mac, iWork is on sale separately.
