July 20, 2023 The First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov of the Ministry of Health of Russia (Sechenov University) announced the development of an AutoHem apparatus for the automatic collection of venous blood.
The AutoHem complex was created by the Russian startup of the same name, founded by Nikolai Myshyakov from the N.V. Sklifosovsky Sechenov University Institute of Clinical Medicine. The device allows automatic venipuncture while maintaining sterility in the work area. In addition, the platform provides storage and preparation of blood before sending to the laboratory.
AutoHem, as noted by the project participants, can be an excellent solution for overloaded clinics and medical centers that do not have a full-fledged procedural room. Moreover, thanks to autonomy, the device can be used outside medical institutions - for example, in pharmacies.

The blood sampling procedure is carried out in a sealed laminar box. This ensures absolute cleanliness and safety regardless of environmental conditions. With the help of sensitive IR chambers and tensoresistors, the device determines the depth of the veins and their diameter. The technology is based on the ability of hemoglobin to absorb IR radiation better than adjacent tissues do. The system performs the procedure completely independently using a robotic manipulator, so that the presence of a medical professional is not required. A new needle and test tube are taken by the device directly with the patient, and the injection area before the procedure is wiped with a tape soaked in an alcohol solution. This guarantees the safety of blood collection.[1]
