2024: Brand Registration

At the end of March 2024, it became known about Rostelecom's decision to produce laptops under its own brand. For this, the "daughter" of the company - Rostelecom Information Technologies - registered two trademarks: one of them is the word "Iron," the second is a black symbol similar to a blob.

The publication drew attention to the appearance of the corresponding records in the database of the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS). RBC It notes that trademarks are registered under the ninth class of MCTU, which includes laptops, tablets, printers and other computer equipment.

The publication also reported a video of the Iron company published in December 2023. The video was created by the Saratov studio of animation, graphics and web design Hot Stream Studio. The video shows a laptop with a registered logo and the name "Iron" under it. Nothing is said about the characteristics and sales of the product in the video. The representative of Hot Stream Studio explained that the agreement was not with Rostelecom, but with one of its startups. He did not comment on the details of the project.

The representative of the Russian Association of Trading Companies and Manufacturers of Electric Household and Computer Equipment Anton Guskov, in a conversation with RBC, called Rostelecom's plans to enter the laptop computer market "quite logical."

According to our estimates, the consumer segment of the laptop market in 2023 amounted to 3.4 million to 3.8 million units. The share of Russian brands did not exceed 10%. However, their development potential is significantly greater, "he said.

Rostelecom itself did not confirm and refute plans to develop its own production of computer equipment, but added that the company by the end of March 2024 is conducting a large number of studies, "pilots" and R&D (research and development), and until their completion and decision-making will not reveal details.^[1]
