2025: iX3 unveiled - the first electric car of the new Neue Klasse line
In September 2025, BMW introduced iX3, the first electric car of the new Neue Klasse line, created to compete with Tesla and Chinese manufacturers.
The SUV received an updated design, new software, fast charging (372 km in 10 minutes) and a range of up to 805 km. The price in Germany is from €68,900.
The company has invested more than €10 billion in the project and plans to transfer most of the lineup to Neue Klasse technologies in the next two years.
Against the backdrop of falling sales in China (-15% in six months), BMW is strengthening cooperation with Huawei, Alibaba and other partners. In 2026, iX3 sales will start in China at a reduced price, and an electric sedan will debut.
2024: Production curtails due to low demand
On November 22, 2024, it became known that BMW would prematurely stop producing electric iX3 crossovers. The reason is that these cars are not popular.
The iX3 model, available as of 2024, is based on the CLAR platform. The power plant includes one electric motor installed in the rear: it provides 286 horsepower and torque up to 400 N·m. The electric drive, consisting of the electric motor itself, transmission and power electronics, is located in an aluminum case, which allows you to save space and reduce weight. The car is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 80 kVt·ch, and the range on a single charge reaches 540 km (CLTC). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 6.8 seconds, the maximum speed is 180 km/h. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional panel combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument display with a similarly sized multimedia system screen.
BMW iX3 electric vehicles are being phased out at the BMW-Brilliance plant, it said. This site will be idle until the new version of the iX3 appears on the Neue Klasse platform in 2026. As of the end of November 2024, the electric crossover is not available for order through the German BMW configurator: the buyer can choose the car only from the available ones, including used options.
As noted, in China, sales of an electric car are iX3 supported by significant discounts, which can exceed 30%. However, BMW is experiencing fierce competition in China from local manufacturers who offer electrified cars with more modern equipment at an attractive price. However, it is expected that the new generation iX3 on the Neue Klasse platform will also be available in China.[1]
2020: Official announcement
In mid-July 2020, BMW introduced the first electric crossover in its lineup. The presentation of the BMW iX3 took place at the Beijing Motor Show. It is noted that the novelty is developed on the same architecture as the serial crossover X3, that is, on the CLAR platform.
According to the manufacturer, the power of the electric motor is 272 horsepower, and the capacity of the battery pack is 70 kVt⋅ch. The electric crossover will be able to travel up to 400 km without recharging. The maximum speed of the car is not specified.
Under the hood of the BMW iX3 is the fifth generation eDrive BMW technology. It includes the latest engine, battery and electronics technology that the company can offer, BMW said. The manufacturer noted that the electric motor, transmission, electronic components and batteries are located in one separate case, and the engine itself dispenses with the use of magnets, that is, rare earth materials are not required in its production. While these components work on technologies of the BMW i family, however, by the time the production version is released, the company promises to transfer the crossover platform to the updated BMW iNext transmission, which should be presented by 2021.
This engine is 30% more powerful than any of BMW Group's pre-existing engines, with 93% higher efficiency. A battery of 188 prismatic elements is attached to it. The battery supports charging on high-speed charging complexes with a capacity of 150 kW, and it will be possible to charge the car from 0 to 80% at such a station in just 30 minutes.
The BMW iX3 electric car also received an updated grille with a blue BMW i edging, characteristic of the BMW i family models. According to the developers, the closed radiator design improves the aerodynamic characteristics of the crossover.[2]
2018: Start accepting pre-orders
In early September 2018, the German company BMW began accepting pre-orders for the purchase of the electric crossover iX3, the mass production of which starts only in a couple of years.
Residents of Norway can book a place in the queue for the purchase of BMW iX3 for 15 thousand crowns (about $1800). Moreover, this electric car at the time of registration of the reserve is only at the stage of a pre-production concept.
The automaker is going to equip the car with an electric power plant with a capacity of 272 horsepower and a 70 kilowatt-hour battery pack. The range of the electric crossover will be 400 km (according to the WLTP worldwide driving cycle), and thanks to the connection to powerful 150-kilowatt charging stations, it will be possible to fill the power cells with energy from 0% to 100% in just half an hour.
The platform for the iX3 was taken from the standard BMW X3 "SUV," but a special rear subframe was created for the electric car and the chassis design was finalized. The exterior of the BMW iX3 differs from the modification with a modified grille internal combustion engine and improved wheels.
The power plant received an eDrive unit, combining an electric motor in a compact case (which does not contain any rare earth elements), a gearbox and electronic components, as well as batteries with a higher charge storage density.
Mass production of BMW iX3 will be organized in 2020 in China, from where the car will be delivered to other markets. It is assumed that the crossover will compete with Mercedes-Benz EQC and Audi e-tron. The latter began to be mass-produced in September 2018. The cost of BMW iX3 is not called.
Under BMW's roadmap, 25 new hybrid and all-electric vehicles will be launched by 2025. iX3 is among the 12 "clean" electric cars from the Bavarian concern.[3]
