2022: Hacker theft $3 million

On December 26, 2022, a company BIT Mining Limited operating one of the world's largest pools for mining cryptocurrencies BTC.com announced that hacker attack attackers had stolen approximately $3 million.

The cyber attack occurred on December 3, 2022. The criminals managed to steal "certain digital assets," including about $700 thousand owned by BTC.com customers, and about $2.3 million owned by BIT Mining Limited itself. The company reported the incident to law enforcement in Shenzhen (China). It is said that thanks to coordination at the local and domestic levels, some digital assets of the BTC.com have already been returned, but their amount has not been specified.

On December 23, 2022, authorities organized an investigation, began collecting evidence, and also requested help from other agencies. The company will make every effort to restore the stolen digital assets, the official notice says.

After this invasion, BIT Mining Limited introduced additional security tools that allow it to more effectively "block and intercept hackers." It is emphasized that the BTC.com is now working as usual, and customer funds are safe. Any other details about the cyber incident have not been disclosed. Therefore, it is not clear exactly how the attackers were able to steal the cryptocurrency and whether any data or personal information was stolen.

According to PeckShield, for incomplete 2022, attackers stole more than $3.3 billion in cryptocurrency. Moreover, $1.3 billion was stolen in the fall. In particular, in September 2022, 17 successful cyber attacks were carried out, in October - 44, in November - 29. The Deribit exchange and the bankrupt FTX, in particular, were under attack.[1]
