2023: Product Announcement
On December 7, 2023, healthcare science and technology company Babson Diagnostics unveiled a device called BetterWay for taking blood from a finger outside medical facilities. The system is said to allow blood testing of non-specialists in convenient places without compromising the quality, accuracy and set of tests.
Babson Diagnostics says BetterWay provides an opportunity to rethink the entire capillary blood collection and analysis process. The amount of blood required to perform the tests is only one-tenth of the amount normally taken in venipuncture. The procedure can be performed not only in hospitals, but also in retail pharmacies and other places that are convenient for visiting. After the analysis, the patient and physician receive medically accurate information that can be easily interpreted and used in further treatment.
Babson Diagnostics notes that the standard stages of sample preparation that are provided between blood collection and its delivery to the laboratory include labeling, mixing, centrifugation, storage and transportation. Various errors may occur during these steps, causing problems with sample quality or resulting in incorrect results. The new system automates pre-analytical processes and maintains optimal storage conditions for samples. The platform is designed to minimize the impact of the human factor. In a specially equipped laboratory, effective analyzers are used, adapted to obtain high-quality results on capillary samples.
BetterWay is expected to help address the shortage of health professionals, as well as expand the availability of health services to different categories of citizens. The system has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).[1]
