2022: Announcement of e-book service
On December 19, 2022, Yandex announced the launch of the Bookmate electronic and audiobook service. It is available to Yandex.Plus subscription users.
It is noted that the Bookmate book option gives access to more than 170,000 electronic and audiobooks from the directories of the Eksmo, AST, MIF, Alpina publishing houses and others in the application of the same name, on the Yandex.Music service and on devices with a voice assistant of the Alice company.
For existing Yandex Plus subscribers, the book option will cost 100 rubles a month, for new users without a subscription - 399 rubles. Current subscribers of the Bookmate service will have access to Yandex Plus with a book option until the end of their subscription. To do this, they need to install a new Bookmate mobile application and log in through their Yandex account. They will also be able to transfer the data of their current accounts, including information about books read, notes, quotes and uploaded books, to a new application.
In June 2022, Yandex announced the purchase of rights to use the Bookmate technology platform, thanks to which the company was able to launch an e-book service. Despite the fact that shares in legal entities were not the subject of the transaction, it means the actual sale of the service to Yandex, said Alexander Brychkin, commercial director of the Russian company Chitai-Gorod. He believes that "business in this case is a license to use platform code, content and client base."
According to the former general director of the Russian division of Bookmate Andrei Baev, Yandex also received the client base of the book service from the transaction, the right to use the brand and original products.
The Bookmate technology platform allows you to read e-books, listen to audiobooks, manage book rights and their metadata, publish content, access to books by region, and contains information about more than one million books, audiobooks and comics, including description, genres and categories, ratings.[1]
