2022: Blockchain launch

At the end of May 2022, the Brazilian Accounts Chamber (TCU) and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) announced the creation of a joint blockchain ecosystem - the Brazilian Blockchain Network (RBB). It is intended to eliminate corruption in public procurement, for which it will control all state costs. As the system is implemented, document flow should be reduced, unnecessary intermediate links will disappear and the cost of maintaining the state apparatus will decrease.

The RBB will initially be used in several government agencies with the aim of improving the quality of services provided to citizens and ensuring greater traceability of government spending.

Brazilian authorities launch blockchain to fight corruption in public procurement

This is just part of the country's broad effort to bring blockchain technology into public administration for a more efficient and transparent workflow. That goes beyond simply regulating cryptocurrencies financially, which is also the focus of many lawmakers in the country.

Ana Arraez, president of TCU, said the idea of using blockchain technology came about in the second half of 2019. In addition, she explained that this topic was very relevant in the framework of government discussions due to the advantages it provides when auditing data provided for government spending.

The use of blockchain technology is becoming widely discussed, as it allows for greater protection, transparency and integrity when storing information in government databases to ensure that posted data can be audited, Arraez said.

João Alexandre Lopes, head of information technology at BNDES, said once the project is formalised, the company will be able to provide everything so that "partners can use this common infrastructure," benefit mutually from blockchain technology, and share such "benefits in the public interest."[1]
