2024: Recall of defective products

In mid-September 2024, it became known that Zimmer Biomet is voluntarily recalling its CPT hip replacement system from the market. According to regulatory data, these endoprostheses break easily and put patients' lives at risk due to the risk of postoperative periprosthetic fracture of the femur.

Regulators issued an alert for hip disease patients, their caregivers and doctors warning of an increased risk of femoral fracture after surgery using Zimmer Biomet's CPT endoprosthesis system.

Zimmer Biomet intends to update the instructions for the use of its system by issuing a warning about the increased risk of fracture of the femur. The company also said it plans to stop selling the CPT hip replacement system entirely by December 2024. The company informed physicians that they should consider using alternative endoprosthesis systems whenever possible.

The company said in an official statement that Zimmer Biomet strives to maintain the highest standards of safety and quality of care. The CPT system has been used by doctors for more than 20 years and provided a high survival rate of 96.4%. We are now helping customers transition to alternative Zimmer Biomet brands as we intend to phase out the CPT system with 12/14 Hip Fixation Tape in 2024 altogether.

Patients with an already installed prosthesis without alarming symptoms are not recommended to replace the prosthesis, however, they should be aware of the risks, be monitored by a doctor and immediately seek help when unexpected pain and difficulty in walking appear.[1]
