Canonical uTouch

Product
Developers: Canonical Ltd.
Date of the premiere of the system: August, 2010
Technology: OS

The Canonical company created a software platform for implementation of multitouch interfaces in the operating system with the open code Ubuntu. The uTouch 1.0 platform supports touch input at all levels — from a system core to user applications and includes a subsystem of recognition of gestures with the program interface for applications.

Though Canonical is not going to release the version of Ubuntu especially for tablet kompyuter, according to the head of the company Mark Shuttleworth in the nearest future, many developers of tablets based on Linux use a core and the infrastructure Ubuntu components as a basis, adding to them own graphical interface. They quite could use uTouch. In Canonical the main attention is intended to be paid to versions for notebooks and netbooks. The interface of the next release Ubuntu Netbook Edition will support completely touch input.

However, touch input on netbooks and notebooks, unlike smartphones and tablets, remains a rarity. Some models of notebooks with the touch screen — for example, Dell Latitude XT2 are serially produced.
