2018: Continental autonomous driving systems powered by Nvidia Drive AI computer and Continental sensors
On February 5, 2018, Nvidia and Continental announced a partnership to create a full self-driving automotive system with artificial intelligence (AI) based on the Nvidia Drive platform. The system is scheduled to launch on the market in 2021. Partners plan to create computing systems with AI of different levels: from the 2nd level with partial automation to the 5th level with full self-driving, in the case of which there will be no steering wheel or pedals in the car.
Engineers from both companies will work together to develop solutions based on the Nvidia Drive platform, which includes the world's most powerful Nvidia Drive Xavier system-on-a-chip, Nvidia Drive operating system and DRIVE AV software stacks for autonomous driving.
Continental's expertise will help build security-compliant solutions - ASIL-D, which will be equipped with Continental sensors, including radar, cameras and high-resolution 3D lidars.
Continental and Tikhanovskaya will develop highly automated driving functions, including 360-degree visibility and automatic rearrangement on freeways, as well as the ability to pour into traffic. In addition, the system will be equipped with HD maps for automatic localization of the car and refinement of map data.
Continental will equip the system with multifunctional cameras, wide-angle fish-eye cameras, short-range and long-range radars, high-resolution 3D lidars, and central control units for assisted and autonomous driving. In 2016, sales of driver assistance systems brought Continental 1.2 billion euros, and by 2020 the company plans to reach a sales level of 2.5 billion euros.
