Cray XK7 Titan

Product
Developers: Cray
Technology: Supercomputer

The AMD company showed in the fall of 2012 support of high-performance computing, having provided the high level of computing power, performance and controllability of the most high-speed supercomputer in the world. For the last five years of a system based on AMD processors for the sixth time win first place in the world ranking of supercomputers that emphasizes aspiration and possibilities of the company to provide the high performance and necessary level of calculations at competitive price. The most powerful Cray XK7 Titan supercomputer in the world containing more than 18 thousand Opteron AMD processors and appearing in the latest revision of rating of the Top500 supercomputers is installed in Okridzhsky national laboratory (ORNL) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (November, 2012).

"Impressive results of AMD in the latest revision of this well-known rating emphasize our commitment in creation of the technologies, best in the industry, which allow customers to collect and analyze large volumes of data for those branches of science which will define finally our future", ― Suresh Gopalakrishnan, the vice president and the general manager of division of server solutions of AMD speaks. ― Using our technology, such partners as ORNL, give to AMD an opportunity to participate in the solution of the major problems of the present".

The publication of semi-annual rating of the Top500 supercomputers matched the SC12 exhibition which took place this week in Solt-Leyk-City where leadership of AMD in the field of support of technology partners and development of own ecosystem is reflected more than in 20 technology demonstration objects. Visitors of AMD stand (No. 2019) had an opportunity to get acquainted with systems based on AMD processors integrating technologies of nearly 30 partner software makers and the equipment and also products of leading companies of the industry, such as Appro, Colfax, Cray, Dell, HP, Penguin and Supermicro. Also systems based on the graphic processors AMD FirePro™, hybrid processors (APU) of AMD an A-series and AMD SeaMicro technologies were shown. Exposure of AMD emphasizes possibilities of the company according to the solution of a number of the major tasks - HPC, processing of large volumes of data and virtualization.

The publication of rating Top500 was preceded by release of the AMD Opteron™ processor of series 6300 which was also provided on SC12. This latest replenishment in the Opteron AMD family provides the excellent performance and scalability for HPC-systems. AMD was raised even more by the capacity of Opteron AMD processors of series 6300 for customers from the sphere of HPC, having offered the optimized compilers and libraries in combination with architecture of main core of new generation.

About the Cray Titan supercomputer of Okridzhsky national laboratory

The ORNL DOE supercomputer consists of 18,688 nodes, each of which contains the 16-core Opteron 6274 AMD processor that gives in total nearly 300,000 main cores and performance in 20 petaFLOPS. Computing power of Titan is 10 times higher, than the previous champion has systems of ORNL Jaguar which was announced in June, 2010 using Opteron AMD processors.
