Cisco opened in March, 2011 in the city Allen (State of Texas) an environmentally friendly data processing center whose architecture includes all product assortment of Cisco for DPC. These products support computing functions, switching and access to storage systems, providing delivery of information technologies as services. The new DPC clearly demonstrates the value of use of network as the platform which allowed to increase reliability, performance and load of resources and provided delivery of IT services (video, mobile services, services of security and joint work) to the staff of Cisco, her customers, partners and other interested persons.

In 2007 Cisco developed strategy of delivery of IT as services and made the long-term plan of implementation of this strategy due to consolidation of data processing centers, virtualization and cloud computing. The new DPC of Cisco in Texas incorporated the best achievements of environmentally friendly design of premises, power efficiency and economy of energy in cooling systems. Its architecture is optimized for virtualization and cloud computing to bring "all as service".

The DPC of new generation opened in Allen closely integrates technology of the unified matrix of switching (Cisco Unified Fabric), the unified environment of calculations (Cisco Unified Computing) and the unified network services (Unified Network Services) into the uniform structure of a data processing center differing in simplicity, scalability and the high level of security. She is capable to deliver any applications in any point in borders of DPC, beyond its limits and also in a network cloud. The new data processing center using technology of the leading partners of Cisco – EMC, Netapp and VMware companies, – became a model of implementation of such solutions Cisco as the unified environment of calculations, the Nexus 7000™ and Nexus 5000™ switches, the virtual switchboards Nexus 1000V, switches for networks of storage, a management system for DPC networks of Data Center Network Manager and the full-scale NX-OS operating system managing all products Cisco for data processing centers.

The new data processing center works together with other DPC of Cisco located in other city of the State of Texas – Richardson. Together they made a so-called "municipal virtual data processing center" (Metro Virtual Data Center, MVDC). Both centers work in an active mode and create the virtualized cloud for delivery of information and technology services and also mutually reserve each other. Such architecture allows both centers to support at the same time in real time crucial business applications, such as WebEx, showing reliability of a world class.

Cisco is going to consolidate the data processing centers, having reduced them in three MVDC pairs which will form a basis of a global private cloud of Cisco that, in turn, will allow the company to deliver to the employees, customers, partners and other interested persons information and technology services, including video, mobile services, safety features and joint work, at simultaneous cost reduction to hardware devices, premises, electricity, cooling systems and operation.

Cloud computing increases ecological purity of DPC

Energetically effective buildings and also "smart" solutions for power supply and cooling do data processing centers by more environmentally friendly. It is promoted also by technologies on which work of DPC is based. For example, the unified switching matrix consolidating data streams and traffic of networks of storage reduces the number of switches, adapters, cables and, finally, reduces energy consumption. This technology allowed Cisco to save more than 1 million US dollars only on cables. Besides, the less cables, the air circulates more freely, increasing efficiency of cooling of hardware devices. According to forecasts of ecologists from Pike Research analytical company, by 2020 cloud computing will reduce energy consumption of DPC by 38 percent and will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in comparison with 2010 by 28 percent.

Here some characteristics of just open data processing center of Cisco:

  • the building of new DPC is capable to sustain a tornado with wind speed to 280 km/h.
  • Instead of hundreds of ecologically harmful rechargeable batteries which are often used in traditional data processing centers, in new DPC of Cisco with a power of 5 megawatts (with a possibility of expansion to 10 megawatts) the flywheels which almost are not requiring energy for continuous rotation are set. With their help in a case of interruptions in the electric power reserve diesel generators will be started.
  • Cooling of DPC happens to the help of energetically effective and economic side blowing. At the same time the atmospheric air is used that reduces the need for artificial cooling and it is especially effective in cold weather. By calculations of Cisco, 65 percent of time the new DPC can be cooled with the atmospheric air cleaned with special filters. This technology will help the company to save annually on cooling 600 thousand dollars and will make the significant contribution to implementation of ecological initiatives of Cisco.
  • Around DPC the reservoir for accumulation of rain moisture which will be used for irrigation of local drought-resistant flora is created.
  • On a roof of DPC the 100 kilowatts solar battery for energy supply to office spaces is installed.

Cisco provided the new data processing center on gold certification of LEED. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is leadership in the field of power and eco-friendly design) is the independent program of ecological certification performed under the auspices of Ecological council of the USA and providing the measured parameters for assessment of ecological purity of architectural projects, constructions, operation and technical support of buildings. In June, 2008 Cisco undertook the obligation by 2012 to reduce emissions of hydrocarbons by a quarter (substantially using own advanced technologies).
