DPC of Yandex in Ivanteyevka of the Moscow region

Product
Developers: Yandex
Technology: DPC

"Yandex" completed the largest Russian DPC with a total area of 4.5 thousand sq.m. In the second queue of DPC the innovation cooling system created by the Russian engineers using which the searcher expects to spend twice less energy on cooling of servers is used.

"Yandex" starts the second queue of the data center in the city of Ivanteyevka situated near Moscow. According to representatives of search engine, all in Russia the company has five data centers, and this is the largest of them. The total area of two of its queues is 4.5 thousand sq.m from which 2.2 thousand sq.m. are the share of the second queue.

In the second queue of new data center the cooling system of the Russian development – Full Free Cooling (FFC) is used. It is based on technology of free cooling (free cooling) at which the premises of data center are cooled at the expense of more cool air from the street.

A developer of this system is the Moscow company Ayaks Engineering. Her representative Andrey Nesterov told CNews that "Yandex" became their first client using the FFC system in the data center.

In total in DPC more than 10 thousand servers will be placed, and the total power consumption is 8 MW. In "Yandex" specified that the indicator of energy consumption is given taking into account the new cooling system. "We can let that electricity which we save on cooling to more useful things - at an IT power in the same data center, for example", - argue in the searcher.

According to TIA-942 standard temperature which needs to be maintained in server premises is +22 degrees Celsius ± 2 degrees. In this or that type the free cooling technology is used in many Russian data centers, however the main feature of the system in Ayaks Engineering call a temperature threshold at which the equipment for cooling of external air is involved – it makes +22 degrees. I.e. the cooling system will turn on only after air temperature exceeds this value. In standard refrigeration units with free cooling cooling joins at +5-+12 degrees Celsius.

In "Yandex" say that using the Ayaks Engineering system the new data center needs twice less electric power in a year for support of the same number of servers. However, some experts consider that in this case this doubtful advantage.

Gromov Evgeny, the technical director of the "Data storage center" owning data center of SafeData told CNews that their company also considered this system: "Its plus – in reduction of costs for power supply, from minuses – four times high price in comparison with the classical systems and more expensive maintenance. At present prices of electricity in Russia in commercial DPC such system is not justified".

The FFC system represents two opened separate circuits, outside and internal. In an internal circuit air of DPC circulates, in an outside circuit street air moves. A basic element of a system is the rotor regenerator in which there is a heat exchange between fresh air of the environment and an indoor air of DPC. The problem of a rotor regenerator is in cooling air in data center from +37 to +24 degrees with fresh air with the temperature up to +22 degrees.

"We began to experiment with different technologies of cooling at the end of 2009. The main objective was in as much as possible to increase a temperature threshold. As a result of it it was succeeded to lift from +13 to +22 degrees Celsius — Gennady Vakhutinsky, the director of construction of the engineering systems of "Yandex" says. — Not only the company, but also the environment will benefit from use in new data center of the economic cooling system — it is less than electric power, less natural resources mean to its development".

From cooling systems, known in Russia, the principle of work, similar to FFC, on the basis of the rotor heat exchanger is used also, for example, in the Kyoto Cooling system developed in Holland.
