2020: Modeling of the movement of air flows through sneezing
Dassault Systemes performs scientific modeling of the movement of air flows through sneezing for assistance in development of individual protection equipment. Design is conducted by joint efforts of participants of open online community 3DExperience of Lab OPEN COVID-19 for the purpose of prompt response on the emergency requests in the conditions of COVID-19 pandemic. Sneezing – one of methods of distribution of pathogens, defiant including COVID-19. Modeling allows to study sneezing process parts to estimate efficiency of the developed and applied individual protection equipment and also to improve their construction. It became known on April 20, 2020.
Dassault Systèmes uses the SIMULIA PowerFLOW applications during creation of a computational model of sneezing better to understand physics of air flows of this phenomenon. SIMULA is also widely applied in the space and automobile industries to development of dynamic models of flows of liquids and gases.
When modeling sneezing in SIMULIA engineers were based on the known data, such as flow rate of air in the form of function from time of its release and also the size and distribution of the microparticles which are formed through sneezing. The realistic process model shown on video, with a detailed trajectory of particle motion of liquid, scattering in air during sneezing was as a result received. The model signals on what areas of individual means of protecting nearby of the standing person these particles will get and also marks small drops which with a flow air will extend out of limits of protective equipment and appear in close proximity to their owner. This modeling is effective from the computing point of view and allows to determine quickly parameters of design of means of protecting, including length and width of a product and also necessary minimum distance between people.
The Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Lab laboratory implements a number of the initiatives integrating designers, engineers, scientists, producers and other specialists including experts in the field of modeling, for collective development of the innovation products. Within joint projects they use platform 3DEXPERIENCE for quick search, assessment, design and production of the solutions allowing to cope with the current calls and to help local hospitals in the conditions of a pandemic.
