2023: Digital Database Creation

At the end of June 2023, it became known about the creation in Russia of a digital database of plant genetic resources. It was formed by specialists of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources named after N.I. Vavilov (VIR) in partnership with five other institutes.

Together with our project colleagues, within the framework of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies 2019-2030. we have successfully launched a network system that combines digitized data on more than 15 thousand samples of various cultures stored with us and our partners. The system has been launched, its structure, functionality and interface have been fully developed, and with the creation of a corresponding state platform in the future, it will be able to form its basis, "Elena Khlestkina, director of VIR, told TASS.

A national digital database of plant genetic resources has been created in Russia

According to her, the creation of such systems is an important event for the joint work of genetic scientists and breeders in the study and improvement of crops. According to her, network interaction is necessary, especially in working with perennial crops, for example, fruit crops. Unlike seeds, it is impossible to collect them in one place - different varieties are stored in the corresponding climatic zones of the country.

It is noted that the joint work of specialists of different profiles made it possible to build an understandable system. For example, the researchers created digital dictionaries for users who do not specialize in botanical classification. The project will ensure constant horizontal interaction of institutions, which will make it possible to work as quickly and conveniently as possible on the preservation and study of plant genetic resources. According to VIR, the new base will form the basis of the future unified state information system.[1]
