Red Hat released Deltacloud in September, 2009, the platform represents several open-source API which can be used for movement of different "cloud" work areas from provider to provider, including Amazon and Rackspace.
To stimulate a contribution of external developers to Deltacloud, Red Hat placed the code of the platform in Apache Incubator which represents storage of programs which eventually can turn into maintaining Apache Foundation. The company also started the website to the address APIwanted.org where any external developers can adjoin development of offers on development of API and other functionality of Deltacloud.
Except directly Red Hat also other vendors, such as Cisco, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Ingres and Intel take part in work on Deltacloud (or use it in one way or another).
In August, 2010 Red Hat submitted own "cloud" Deltacloud platform to DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force) as the potential standard of "intercloud" interaction.
Also Red Hat suggests to use Deltacloud as the standard for program interfaces of the cloud systems providing transfer of applications from one system in another. Such standard, consider in Red Hat, should not be under control of one company. Independent organization should dispose of it. The lack of compatibility between the cloud systems of different developers is one of the main obstacles for wide use of cloud computing in corporate environment, analysts note.
