XtremIO is horizontally scalable flash array created from the blocks called "X-Brick".
2017: XtremIO X2 is released
On May 16, 2017 Dell EMC was provided by XtremIO X2 for category all-flash with constantly working inline-services of data.
A system provides efficiency level for thousands of clients in the world. Having a combination of the equipment and the advanced software, X2 offers for 80% smaller response time and for 25% more effective reduction of amount of data, supports twice more copies on a cluster for iCDM.
X2 provides the trebled capacity for each module X-Brick, multidimensional scalability: from 7 to 138 TB on X-Brick ß expansion to eight X-Brick. Density of a rack of X2 is increased four times. A system has effective capacity to 5.5 PB and density more than 100 TB on 1U of height.

2016: Upgrade of management of DWH of EMC XtremIO All-Flash
On September 21, 2016 the Dell EMC company provided the upgraded abilities to integrate applications and control functions for the platform of storage EMC XtremIO All-Flash in virtual environments of VMware and Microsoft.
The update of XtremIO gives an opportunity to automation of workflows, helping administrators of applications to take advantages of the simplified selection of resources and process automation in virtual environments. The built-in functions of Integrated Copy Data Management (iCDM) help to reduce the need for purchase of the separate equipment and software, managing storage of copies of data.
Among updates for the XIOS XtremIO operating system, functions are selected:
- Integration of products Dell EMC and VMware - XtremIO, EMC AppSync, EMC VSI and VMware vCenter Web UI which allow administrators of vCenter to execute local recovery of virtual machines and data warehouses, to recover the VM separate files, to provide copies of data for third-party tasks.
- Plug-in of XtremIO vRealize Orchestrator which can independently work or as a part of VMware vRealize Automation and allows to create the directory of self-service from the full automated infrastructure processes for administrators of virtual infrastructure, databases and owners of applications.
- The built-in support of Microsoft PowerShell of versions 4.0 and 5.0 through XtremIO Management Server gives the chance to administrators to manage XtremIO using scripts based on PowerShell. When sharing with VMware PowerCLI it allows to organize and automate any tasks in virtual environment.
- The built-in support of Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) allows to select the XtremIO resources and to manage them using the SMI-S interface, using any applications. SMI-S helps to implement cross-platform control circuits and to select resources in heterogeneous and multivendor environments of storage from a broad spectrum of the applications supporting SMI-S. For example, XtremIO shows the new level of support of virtual environments Microsoft Hyper-V through the SMI-S profile for System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).
Also released Dell EMC the beta of the user XtremIO web interface on HTML5 platform. This web interface provides to users simple and convenient option of management XtremIO, allowing to perform monitoring and to analyze reports from any devices, including – mobile.
Functions are available in the latest version of the XtremIO operating system as a free software update to clients with current agreements of support. The plug-in of XtremIO vRealize Orchestrator will become available until the end of 2016.
2015: EMC released XtremIO of version 4.0
On May 19, 2015 the EMC company presented the solution XtremIO of version 4.0.
In it are implemented: high performance, automation and possibilities of stream data processing.

2014: XtremIO 3.0
On July 9, 2014 EMC announced release of XtremIO 3.0.
The updated functionality
- Free software updating for the existing arrays to XtremIO 3.0 — significant increase in security, capacity, performance and functionality.
- New more effective pictures of data in memory allow to create high-performance copies of applications — economical space usage of metadata and an opportunity to develop at the request of the application environment with a capacity up to one petabyte.
- New feature of the built-in data compression "on the fly" — 4-fold increase in formatted capacity in application environments.
- New options of configurations of the initial level (Starter X-Brick 5 TB) and higher levels — new horizontally scalable clusters with 6 modules X-Brick ß 12 active controllers.
2013
On November 15, 2013 EMC announced the beginning of sales of EMC XtremIO - an array on a flash disks. To achieve maximum capacity without prejudice to efficiency and durability the coordinated work of four technologies is used:
- Placement of data on the basis of contents
- Two-stage mechanism of processing of metadata
- Algorithm of data protection XtremIO Data Protection (XDP)
- Shared metadata (shared in-memory metadata).
Description
For each module capacity 10 TB X-Brick предусмотрена. Arrays of XtremIO show performance in 1 million accidental input-output operations per second (IOPS) with an effective capacity of 250 TB in one cluster of XtremIO with the built-in deduplication. One cluster of XtremIO is scaled from two to eight controllers and up to 128 cores, can work with any OLTP database, the virtual server and infrastructure of VDI with all active services of data.
Main Characteristics
- Placement of data on the basis of contents supports internal balancing and optimization of an array to percent shares for all solid-state disks (SSD) and controllers of an array and also deletes the duplicated data "on the fly" on the way of data transmission.
- The two-stage mechanism of processing of metadata allows an array to use completely inherent a flash technology of advantage of accidental access and to place data in any place of an array without application of the internal processes of cleaning (called also "collecting of garbage"). It allows XtremIO to avoid inherent to others a flash arrays of decrease in performance measures in IOPS for 50%, increases in a delay for 1000% and 10-fold reduction of service life a flash disks.
- Algorithm of data protection of XDP (XtremIO Data Protection) - an algorithm, specific for a flash technology, which provides protection against failures of solid-state disks (SSD) and allows to increase by 6 times formatted capacity in comparison with classical RAID. The algorithm of XDP allows end users to use 100% of capacity of XtremIO, saving the maximum level of performance. In others a flash arrays decline in production begins when filling an array for 60 — 80% of capacity. Thus, use of an algorithm of XDP increases the formatted capacity of an array by 40% in comparison with others a flash arrays. Besides, at long operation in the conditions of DPC effective algorithms of XDP provide quadruple performance improvement and service life a flash disks in comparison with RAID.
- Shared metadata (shared in-memory metadata) allow an array to provide a broad spectrum of performance measures and to quickly clone information stored in an array that provides sharp acceleration of accomplishment of such standard tasks as deployment of virtual machines, etc. The cloning of virtual machines is made with a speed up to 20 times exceeding transmission band width between a host and an array, executed several times quicker and with smaller influence on production virtual machines, than in other arrays on a flash disks.
Power
Thanks to a low delay of performance of input-output of XtremIO perfectly works in the most exacting conditions and is ideal for virtualization of servers, databases, analytics, VDI and other tasks. You should not worry any more that performance will fall in process of increase in volumes.
Simplicity
The revolutionary architecture of XtremIO does not require difficult actions for installation – on system implementation no more than an hour will leave. The XIOS operating system simplifies setup process, carries out automatic balancing and provides maximum capacity without participation of the administrator.
Availability
Thanks to alignment of wear, reduction of amount of data and technologies of decrease in number of write operations XtremIO provides record performance, using at the same time less flash disks. As a result of XtremIO it is more profitable at the price for gigabyte, than traditional storage systems. Plus economy on electricity.
Integration and compatibility
Management of an array of XtremIO is integrated with VMware vSphere and accelerates by means of program interfaces (API) of VMware of VAAI.
XtremIO is compatible to other EMC technologies, including EMC VPLEX, EMC PowerPath and service EMC Secure Remote Support (ESRS).
