2025: Start of OS creation
At the end of March 2025, it became known that the European Union had begun to create its own operating system called EU OS. It is assumed that in the future this software platform will be able to become an alternative to Windows to the American corporation Microsoft.
EU OS is based on Linux code. In particular, it is said about the use of the atomically updated edition of Fedora Kinoite, the key advantages of which are increased reliability and safety. Fedora Kinoite is a Fedora Silverblue (immutable desktop operating system) counterpart with a KDE Plasma working environment.
The EU OS platform is focused primarily on the public sector. The distribution "includes everything you need to deploy a Linux-based operating system in an average government agency with several hundred users." One of the main goals of the project is independence from specific software suppliers. The OS will allow the introduction of new technologies while observing the transparency of financial expenses. At the same time, the use of open standards will contribute to innovation.
According to The Register, the EU OS project is being implemented in light of increased tensions between the European Union and the United States. Creating your own OS will allow government organizations in the EU to abandon Windows on personal computers. However, The Register emphasizes, the choice of Fedora as the basis for EU OS raises some questions: the fact is that Fedora is being developed with the support of American companies Red Hat and IBM. At the same time, Europe has its own Linux distributions, including openSUSE, developed by the openSUSE Project community and sponsored by the German company SUSE.[1]
