2019: Announcement
In the middle of December, 2019 E Ink Holdings about creation of color displays for e-books which, according to the producer, on the characteristics are not inferior to black-and-white screens. The company showed Print-Color technology which should solve problems of the previous color displays E Ink Triton which appeared too faded.
Emergence of inexpensive tablets nullified chances to receive Kindle with the color display on electronic ink. However the management of E Ink still considers that e-books with high-contrast color displays and a low power consumption will be rather demanded.
The Print-Color technology allows each pixel of the display to display black, white, red, green, blue colors or their combinations. As well as other products E Ink, Print-Color screens consume energy only at change of the image on the screen. As soon as the image is loaded, it can remain on the screen infinitely long, even for lack of a power supply.
The main scope of new displays in E Ink consider the educational sector, business and retail. Theoretically new technology can be used in consumer devices, such as e-books, but so far whether demand for similar products that economy from the scale of production allowed such companies as Amazon, B & N or Kobo is rather high, to sell color e-books at the attractive prices.
The first displays using new technology, as expected, will appear in the second quarter 2020, and consumer devices can enter the market by the fall of the same year. Most likely such devices will belong to high quality expensive lines, such as Sony Digital Paper or Onyx BOOX. The company already provided a prototype with the 10.3-inch display and support of the Wacom EMR stylus.[1]
