2023: Product Announcement
On October 9, 2023, the American company HistoSonics announced the Edison system, designed to destroy malignancies using sound waves. This method is a minimally invasive alternative to surgical resection and thermal ablation for patients with primary and metastatic liver cancer.
The Edison system is based on histotripsy, a technology that uses focused sound energy to create controlled acoustic cavitation, causing the tumor to break down at the subcellular level. The Edison complex additionally provides doctors with effective imaging tools, which allows them to direct waves exactly to malignant formations and thereby destroy cancer cells without damaging healthy tissues. Visualization is carried out continuously in real time during the procedure.
The Edison platform uses patented technologies, and HistoSonics is supported financially by Johnson & Johnson. The system makes it possible to destroy inoperable liver tumors. Research suggests that the level of technical success when using the complex reaches 95.5%. HistoSonics has received approval to implement Edison from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
As a surgeon, I am very pleased to be able to offer a procedure by which we can accurately destroy liver tumors without the use of a scalpel or needles, which we hope will allow patients to recover faster while avoiding certain complications, such as surgical infections or radiation disease typical of other treatments, Joe Amaral noted.
