2019: Completion of development of the first sample

As of October, 2019 the Russian developer of microprocessors, microcontrollers and managing computer systems MCST works on the first prototype of the new processor - 16-core with topology of 16 nanometers. Vasily Vorobushkov, the chief executive of MCST told TAdviser about it. The prototype is expected in 2020, and final completion of development - in 2021.

The 16-core processor will be based on architecture Elbrus. From the most essential innovations developers call support of virtualization at the hardware level. And both native virtualization, and virtualization using binary broadcasting when from under native OS it is possible to start the virtual machine emulating codes h86 will be supported. Virtualization at the hardware level, as a rule, allows to receive higher performance of virtual machines approximate to the capacity of the real equipment, in comparison with program virtualization.

To the output of the 16-core processor MCST is going to offer customers the improved version 8-core (a photo - hi-tech.mail.ru)

At the same time to release the new processor in Russia it will not turn out yet. The largest Russian producer of microelectronic products Mikron did not develop production of processors with topology of 16 nanometers, 28 nanometers yet.

Further in MCST already consider development of the processor with topology of 7 nanometers. But this project did not begin yet, the representative of MCST specified. The foreign competitor - Intel - expects to release the first 7-nanometer products in 2021.

The last development of MCST which is already used at customers is the 8-core Elbrus-8C processor. In it at the hardware level virtualization is not supported, only on program, including - applications in separate virtual containers, for example, using Kubernetes.

In 2020 MCST is going to begin to offer the improved version of this processor - Elbrus-8CB: with architectural improvements, the increased frequency, performance, memory, etc., representatives of MCST told TAdviser.

From big customers the 8-core Elbrus processor already uses, for example, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, some oil and gas companies. And one of "subsidiaries" of the Russian Railway – Elteza company - implements computer systems based on the protected hardware-software Elbrus platform in management systems for train service. Servers and DWH on Elbrusakh are used also at telecom operators on communication hubs. To them it is delivered by the partner of MCST - Norsi Trance company.

At the price domestic processors so far in unprofitable direction differ from import analogs. MCST notes that in the microelectronic industry the price very much depends on mass character of production. In order that there was a significant reduction in cost of Elbrus, it is necessary to increase production volumes by couple of orders, Vasily Vorobushkov says. And the last, in turn, depend on order sizes.

But in the company work on reducing the prices. There are also some technical capabilities for cost value reduction, the representative of MCST noted in a conversation with TAdviser.

At the same time at decrease in technology regulation cost, as a rule, grows, speak in MCST. When there were processors of 28 nanometers, they cost cheaper, than 7 nanometers, new with topology. Besides, the accompanying infrastructure is necessary to develop processors on such technical process. And it requires investments too.
