2021: Development of electronic road signs

In early April 2021, it became known about the development by the Recognition Technology company of electronic road signs that allow you to display different maximum permitted speed of cars.

By April 5, 2021, authorities can remind drivers that in bad weather it is better to slow down using road signs and signs depicting thunderstorm clouds. For example, on a highway with an allowed speed of 90 km/h there may be a sign recommending that in bad weather the speed be reduced to 70 km/h. However, implementation of the recommendation is not necessary.

It is expected that the requirements for limiting the speed displayed by electronic road signs will be mandatory, and a fine will have to be paid for their violation. Monitoring of compliance with traffic rules will be carried out by photo and video recording cameras.

Electronic road signs will appear in Russia

To record such violations, it is planned to use three traffic cameras at once - two of them will control the entrance of the car to the arch with a dynamic sign. Both the car and the information on the scoreboard will be shot. If the passage under the arch is made speeding, then the second camera located 30-50 meters from the arch will record a violation.

According to the developers, the new technology should help reduce the speed of cars in difficult conditions - low visibility due to bad weather or sleet. It is allowed to use signs with light indication, as well as with symbols of inscriptions and symbols in matrix form.

The head of the ONF working group "Protection of the Rights of Motorists" and the coordinator of the Blue Bucket Society movement, Pyotr Shkumatov, did not support the idea and believes that the innovation is simply "the evolution of camera traps." Drivers themselves know that in bad weather speed should be reduced, and if there is suddenly a 70 km/h installation at the Moscow Ring Road, then 100 km/h, then 60 km/h, this will bring just billions of fines, the expert believes.[1]
