2019: Varian provided the first-ever AI control system of radiation therapy

In the middle of September, 2019 Varian Oncology Systems (enters into the Varian group) provided the first-ever control system of radiation therapy at oncological diseases on the basis of AI.

The system of radiation therapy which received the name Ethos is intended for daily control of therapy with individual correction in a standard 15-minute interval. A new system can independently select and adjust the plan of treatment of the patient depending on a type of a tumor and its anatomic changes.

Oncologists know that the status of patients changes daily, as well as a tumor. The Ethos system allows to personalize radiation therapy on a daily basis and also to optimize workflow thanks to planning opportunities on the basis of AI. The doctor enters into the Ethos system the plan of treatment which then can be corrected by a system depending on type of a tumor and characteristic of cages and also from change of the sizes and provision of a tumor of the patient. For this purpose a system also uses multimodal images, including MRT, PET and KT.

The president of Varian Oncology Systems company Chris Toth considers that AI technologies allow to optimize workflow and to reduce treatment time in unprecedented scales. The Ethos system already passed tests in hospital of Herlev and Gentofte in Denmark. Doctors were so impressed with system operation that included in a research of additional patients. The chief physician of department of radiation therapy of hospital of Herlev and Gentofte noted that application of the Ethos system helped doctors to visualize better changes in anatomy of the patient and to quickly adapt therapy for these changes. It yielded the fruits — at least in one case the therapy optimization offered by the Ethos system allowed to achieve the clinical goals of treatment.[1]
