FEFU: Anti-remor neurostimulator

The Far Eastern University (FEFU) created and tested the first Russian anti-transplant neurostimulator, which does not require implantation into the patient's body. The university spoke about the new development in November 2023.

According to TASS, citing the FEFU press service, the device's sensors are attached to the arm, and pulses are transmitted through the skin to suppress tremors. The device itself is located on the forearm and feels like a phone when jogging, the developers say.

Alexander Artemenko, bioengineer of the FEFU Laboratory of Experimental and Translational Medicine, noted that before the start of the mass use of the stimulant, several more studies are to be carried out, since in each individual case the tremor decreases differently.

Arthur Biktimirov, a leading neurosurgeon at the FEFU Medical Complex, noted that by November 2023 there is only one analogue of such a stimulant in the world, it is produced in the United States. There are no such devices on the Russian market yet.

Now tremors can be suppressed with the help of tablets, which are not always effective, or operations, - said Biktimirov.

The first domestic prototype of the neurostimulator, developed at FEFU, was tested on five patients with Parkinson's disease. There is positive dynamics, the device reduces tremors by 80%. The FEFU noted that additional studies are needed to develop the stimulation method and increase the stability of the therapy results. Approximately the device will appear on the market in two years, the university said in November 2023. It is added that the work on the creation of an anti-respiratory neurostimulator is carried out with the support of the Priority 2030 program of FEFU.[1]
