2022: Neural Network Announcement

On November 30, 2022, Disney announced the creation of a neural network called the Face Re-Aging Network (FRAN), which allows you to change the appearance of the actor in just a few seconds, making him older or younger.

Researchers note that a special technique has been developed to train artificial intelligence. The fact is that it is impossible to use real people's datasets to train a neural network. This would require pairs of images showing a person at different ages, but with the same facial expression and pose, in identical lighting conditions and on the same background. It is simply impossible to comply with all these conditions.

Disney has created a neural network that easily makes actors older or younger

Therefore, experts created a database of several thousand randomly generated persons. Then, by applying existing aging/rejuvenation tools, the researchers changed the ages of these virtual individuals. Further, the results were sent to the FRAN neural network for training. As a result, artificial intelligence has learned to analyze the image of the head and predict which parts of the face change over time. To change age, FRAN applies effects such as wrinkling or skin smoothing.

The creators of the tool state that it works effectively even if a person moves or changes the lighting in the frame. At the same time, the face remains as natural and realistic as possible. It takes an average of only five seconds to change your appearance. The implemented approach, according to Disney, will speed up the creation of films and various video materials, as well as reduce the financial costs of rendering and/or work of make-up artists. It is claimed that FRAN is the first practical, fully automated and ready-to-use tool to change the age of actors.^[1][2]
