2019: Facebook pays users $20 a month for full access to personal data

At the end of January, 2019 it became known that Facebook pays users for installation of the special VPN-application under the name Facebook Research getting access to complete personal data. As soon as this information was made public, the company decided to wind down the project partially.

Journalists of TechCrunch made own investigation which showed that since 2016 users of Facebook Research aged from 13 up to 35 years receive up to $20 a month and additional earnings for involvement of other people. The program is installed on iOS and Android and keeps track of all activity of the user to such an extent that the edition calls use of this service of "sale of own private life".

Facebook Research has access to location of the user, his e-mails, stories of the browser and Internet search and also to private messages in messengers and social networks, including to photos and videos. Facebook even asked users to make a page screenshot with the history of orders in Amazon online store.

Facebook Research is similar to other application for "protection of traffic" by means of connection to VPN network — Onavo Protect. In the summer of 2018 Apple  deleted it from App Store  because of abuse of regulations of shop in the field of confidentiality of user data. The free Onavo Protect program allowed to protect in addition the transmitted data, however in Facebook preferred not to advertize that own this service and collect some data from devices.

How many users set Facebook Research, it is unknown. The company distributes the application through services of beta testing Applause, BetaBound and uTest where it is mentioned as the Atlas project. It is made including to receive audience of IOS bypassing App Store, TechCrunch notes.

Facebook emphasizes that it is impossible to call this application espionage as its users agree to data processing. At the same time the company decided to close the IOS-VERSION of the program and to leave the version for Android.[1]
