2024: Platform Closure Announcement
In mid-May 2024, Meta (in Russia it was recognized as extremist, its activities are prohibited in the country) announced the closure of the Workplace platform. The service was not as successful as expected in the corporation, so its management decided to focus on projects in the fields of artificial intelligence and metaverse.
Workplace has several million users. They were given time (until August 31, 2025) to switch to using other services. Meta recommends migrating to the Zoom Workvivo product and calls it the "only preferred partner."
It is noted that customers will be able to view data in the Workplace application for about a year from the moment it is disabled. After that, access to the platform will be completely closed, and all data will be erased.
From September 2024, the company will reduce the monthly fee for using the platform by 50%. From September 1, 2025 to May 1, 2026, Workplace will be completely free. Meta recommends that users download all important data for them directly from the Workplace settings in the Download Your Information section or export them using the Workplace API.
As Meta emphasized, AI solutions and metaselectrons can radically change their approaches to organizing work in the future. In this regard, support for a separate corporate messenger is no longer a priority for the company, Meta said in a statement.
As Bloomberg notes, the company's bet on such promising technologies on the one hand is justified, since AI and VR can really change their approaches to work in the future. On the other hand, the Workplace platform managed to recruit several large customers, and they were dissatisfied with the company's decision to curtail the project.[1]

2016: Commercial launch of the office social network Facebook Workplace
On October 10, 2016, Facebook officially announced the launch of a social network for Workplace companies. The service, which was originally called Facebook at Work, has been tested for about two years.
In terms of user interface, Facebook Workplace is similar to Facebook. The new service supports user groups for organizing teams, personalized news feed, video calls and discussions.
Communication within the Facebook Workplace takes place in complete isolation from personal Facebook profiles, even if both social networks are running on the same smartphone. The developers of the new service declare a high level of security that ensures the confidentiality of information.
Facebook Workplace has no ads, and the main means of monetization has become paid tariffs for corporate customers. Companies will pay $1 for each user if more than 10 thousand employees are connected to the service. With an active audience of less than 1,000 people, the cost of a Facebook Workplace subscription will be $3 per user. Non-profit organizations and educational institutions will be exempted from fees.
As noted by Re/code, Facebook Workplace does not offer a document tool like Microsoft Word. Project manager Julien Codorniou stated the following:
The priority for the company is the use of the basic product. Then we will study other projects. |
By October 2016, about 1,000 companies around the world use Workplace as a platform for sharing corporate information. Customers of the service include Starbucks, Oxfam and Booking.com. The largest number of users of the product are registered in India, Norway, USA, Great Britain and France.
Facebook Workplace is available to companies around the world. To connect to it, you need to fill out an application on the project website. The service is accessed through an Internet browser or applications for the iOS and Android mobile platforms.[2]
2015: Facebook at Work Office Social Network Launch
On January 14, 2015, the company Facebook launched social network for internal corporate communication. The service allows employees of organizations and enterprises to conduct business correspondence without using personal Facebook accounts.
The new project is called Facebook at Work. In terms of basic functionality and appearance, it resembles Facebook, but is focused on use within companies.
The employer who launched Facebook at Work can create a news feed where noticeable events taking place in the company will be displayed. The service allows you to organize individual and group chats, exchange files, create mass invitations of employees to corporate events and groups for joint projects.
At the same time, communication between Facebook at Work users takes place in complete isolation from personal Facebook profiles, even if both social networks are running on the same smartphone. The developers of the new service promise a high level of security that ensures the confidentiality of information.
Facebook launched an office social network
Lars Rasmussen, Facebook at Work project manager, told TechCrunch that the service is focused on companies with 100 or more people.[3]
It is not known how Facebook is going to make money on the corporate social network. It is not planned to introduce advertising in it (at least at the initial stage). Also, the company does not intend to collect information from the site for sale to marketers.
Facebook at Work is available as apps for iOS and Android mobile devices. The programs are located in the Apple App Store and Goolge Play Store directories. At the time of the announcement of the new social network, only some companies included in the beta testers could use it.
Nothing is known about the timing of the launch of the project for all wishing institutions. On the Facebook website, you can only leave a request to launch Facebook at Work within the company.[4]
